Referring carers for respite

We provide respite and support to caring families living in South Australia. GP's, case managers, service providers, support workers or a family member can make a referral who might benefit from using respite services.

People are eligible to use services if they:

  • Provide significant or on-going care and support to a family member or friend who is frail and elderly, has dementia, a mental illness, a disability, chronic illness, terminal illness or complex needs.
  • Carers calling from the south and east country region of South Australia will be linked with the Commonwealth Respite and Carelink Centre, South and East Country, which is a program of Carers SA.  Staff will assess your eligibility and provide information and respite.
  • Carers calling from outside the south and east country region of South Australia will be linked with the Commonwealth Respite and Carelink Centre relevant to their location.

Making a referral

  • Carers can phone and refer themselves
  • Family members and friends can contact on behalf of the carer, with the carer's consent.
  • GP's and service providers can make a referral with the carer's consent.  With the carer's consent, we will also let the provider know the outcome of the referral.

We have staff rostered to receive referrals and follow-up with carers about their needs.
