Carers provide a wide range of supports to the person they care for and often have multiple caring responsibilities,[i] with care provided ranging from personal care to transport to medical care[ii]. These supports include personal care (such as showering and support with eating), in-home supervision, transportation and help with shopping and medical needs.[iii] Carers may also provide care in conjunction with formal care arrangements such as respite, share the caring responsibilities with other informal carers such as fellow family members or be a primary carer performing the majority of the informal caring duties.[iv]

The duties performed by carers as part of their caring role often result in many carers facing heavy demands and experiencing stress due to the large amount of time spent caring for a care recipient. These stresses may include reduced physical and/or mental health, limited educational and workforce opportunities, social isolation and housing stress as a direct result of their caring role. Furthermore, carers often feel isolated due to the loss of companionship and relationships.[v]
